Surah al-Ikhlas
Qul huwa Allahu ahad. Allahus-samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.
Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge, upon whom all depend. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is none comparable to Him.
What it means
Four short lines that rule out every rival, every partner and every resemblance. It answers the oldest question people ask about God by stripping away everything He is not. The Prophet ﷺ called it equal to a third of the Quran because the Quran speaks of law, stories and Allah Himself, and this surah is entirely about Him.
When and how
Recite three times each morning and evening. Before sleep, recite it with al-Falaq and an-Nas into cupped hands, then wipe them over your head, face and whatever you can reach of your body, three times.
Its virtue
The Prophet ﷺ said it is equal to a third of the Quran, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 5013. Reciting it with the last two surahs three times each morning and evening is enough to protect a person from everything, as reported in Sunan Abi Dawud 5082 and Jami at-Tirmidhi 3575.
