Wearing Something New

Allahumma lakal-hamdu anta kasawtanih, as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayri ma suni'a lah, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lah.

O Allah, all praise is Yours; You clothed me with this. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I take refuge with You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.

What it means

New clothes can make a person grateful or vain, and this dua asks for the first outcome. The phrase about what it was made for covers the use you will put it to, since the same garment can take you to good places or bad ones.

When and how

Say it once when you first wear something new.

Its virtue

The Prophet ﷺ would say this whenever he put on a new garment, naming it as a shirt, a cloak or a turban, reported in Sunan Abi Dawud 4020 and Jami at-Tirmidhi 1767.
