Blessings Upon Your Servant and Messenger

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, Your servant and Your Messenger, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, and send favour upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent favour upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim.

What it means

This form describes him first as the servant of Allah and then as His Messenger, in that order. It is a safeguard built into the words themselves: we love him and ask for the highest honour for him, without raising him above the rank Allah gave him.

When and how

Use it in the prayer or outside it, and pause on the word servant when you say it.

Its virtue

Reported from Abu Said al-Khudri as a wording the Prophet ﷺ taught for sending blessings upon him, in Sahih al-Bukhari 3369.
