We Have Entered the Morning and the Kingdom Belongs to Allah
Rabbi a'udhu bika minal-kasali wa su'il-kibar. Rabbi a'udhu bika min 'adhabin fin-nari wa 'adhabin fil-qabr.
We have entered the morning and the kingdom belongs to Allah, and all praise is for Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom, to Him belongs all praise, and He is able to do all things. My Lord, I ask You for the good of this day and the good of what comes after it, and I take refuge with You from the evil of this day and the evil of what comes after it. My Lord, I take refuge with You from laziness and from a wretched old age. My Lord, I take refuge with You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.
What it means
The day begins by handing ownership back to its Owner. Before you make a single plan you state that the kingdom is His, then you ask for the good of the hours ahead and refuge from their harm. The two things it asks protection from, laziness and a bitter old age, are the quiet ruins of a life rather than the dramatic ones, which is why they are worth naming early.
When and how
Say it once after Fajr. In the evening say the matching version that begins with Amsayna.
Its virtue
This is what the Prophet ﷺ would say when morning came, as narrated by Ibn Mas'ud and reported in Sahih Muslim 2723.
