Refuge From Worry and Grief
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.
O Allah, I take refuge with You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from being crushed by debt and from being overpowered by others.
What it means
The pairs are precise. Worry looks forward and grief looks back; helplessness is not being able and laziness is not being willing; miserliness withholds money and cowardice withholds effort. The last two are not inner states at all but outside pressures, debt and domination, which shows how completely this dua covers what wears a person down.
When and how
Say it morning and evening, and especially in any period of debt, low mood or feeling trapped.
Its virtue
The Prophet ﷺ used to say it often, as narrated by Anas ibn Malik, who saw its effect in his own life, reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 6369.
