O Allah, I Ask You for Guidance and Piety
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَىٰ وَالتُّقَىٰ وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَىٰ
Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.
O Allah, I ask You for guidance, mindfulness of You, chastity and contentment.
What it means
Four words that between them cover a whole life. Guidance is knowing the way, taqwa is keeping to it, afaf is restraint in desire, and ghina here is the richness of a heart that does not need what others have. The last two are the two appetites most people are ruled by.
When and how
Say it once in the morning and evening, and when you notice envy or desire pulling at you.
Its virtue
This is a dua of the Prophet ﷺ reported in Sahih Muslim 2721.
