O Allah, By You We Enter the Morning
اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا، وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا، وَبِكَ نَحْيَا، وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ، وَإِلَيْكَ النُّشُورُ
Allahumma bika asbahna, wa bika amsayna, wa bika nahya, wa bika namutu, wa ilaykan-nushur.
O Allah, by You we enter the morning and by You we enter the evening, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.
What it means
Four short clauses that place every state you will ever be in under one authority: your morning, your evening, your life, your death, and what comes after. It is a quick reminder that you did not wake up by your own arrangement.
When and how
Say it once in the morning. In the evening say the version that begins with Allahumma bika amsayna.
Its virtue
The Prophet ﷺ taught his Companions to say this when morning came, reported in Sunan Abi Dawud 5068 and Jami at-Tirmidhi 3391, where it is graded good.
